Distillation in petroleum industry
All petroleum refineries throughout the world employ at least crude oil distillation units to separate naturally occurring fractions for further use, but those which employ distillation alone are limited in their yield of valuable transportation fuels. For example, only 40% of distilled crude oil is gasoline; however, gasoline is one of the major products made by oil companies. Rather than continually distilling large quantities of crude oil, oil companies chemically process some other fractions from the distillation column to make gasoline; this processing increases the yield of gasoline from each barrel of crude oil. A crude oil refinery is a group of industrial facilities that turns crude oil and other inputs into finished petroleum products. A refinery's capacity refers to the maximum amount of crude oil designed to flow into the distillation unit of a refinery, also known as the crude unit. The crude oil distillation unit (CDU) is the first processing unit in virtually all petroleum refineries. The CDU distills the incoming crude oil into various fractions of different boiling ranges, each of which are then processed further in the other refinery processing units. Fractional distillation is used for the distillation of crude oil in the petroleum industry. The fractional distillation of the crude oil is the starting point for the manufacturing of gasoline, lubricating oil, diesel, fuel oil, chemicals and plastics. Distillation process is used in various commercial industries for different kinds of applications. In petrochemical industry, distillation is an essential process that helps in refining and obtaining usable products from the crude oil. Therefore, oil refinery plants usually have a crude oil distillation unit. From time immemorial petroleum products, in the first instances crude oils and natural bitumens, have been employed in the service of man, but the real development of the industry, which has now assumed such large proportions, dates from the application of distillation methods to the working up of crude oils, and distillation, in one form or another, still affords the most practical method of splitting up crudes into their commercial products. Although many and great modifications of the

Learn about the process of oil distillation in order to create fuels and plastics with BBC Bitesize GCSE Chemistry. 15 Sep 2014 Now that I actually work on refining projects and have a much more intimate knowledge of what goes on in an oil refinery, I know that in reality An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is processed and refined into more useful petroleum products, such as experimenting with distillation and became the first person in the U.S. to attempt to use liquid petroleum as a starting material to produce lamp oil. His refining

The word petroleum is derived from the Latin word Petra means Rock and Oleum means Oil. Petroleum is a complex mixture of different hydrocarbons. An oil refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is processed and refined into useful Crude oil is separated into fractions by fractional distillation. In this lab we used the Distillation Method and this method is when we separated oil by heat in different components and this is the first stage in refining. We also A technique for cleaning core samples in which the water fraction is removed by distillation and the oil fraction is extracted using solvents. Cleaning is done with
Distillation of crude oil Crude oil is a mixture of many hundreds of liquid hydrocarbons. Dissolved in it are many other hydrocarbons some of which are solids and some gases (the lower members of the alkane family, predominantly methane and ethane but often with some propane and butane). Distillation, process involving the conversion of a liquid into vapour that is subsequently condensed back to liquid form. It is exemplified at its simplest when steam from a kettle becomes deposited as drops of distilled water on a cold surface. Distillation is used to separate liquids from nonvolatile solids, From time immemorial petroleum products, in the first instances crude oils and natural bitumens, have been employed in the service of man, but the real development of the industry, which has now assumed such large proportions, dates from the application of distillation methods to the working up of crude oils, and distillation, in one form or another, still affords the most practical method of splitting up crudes into their commercial products. In the petroleum industry, oil stabilization is a form of partial distillation that reduces vapor pressure of crude oil, thereby making it safe for storage and transport as well as reducing the atmospheric emissions of volatile hydrocarbons.
